Sample Collection & Preservation Overview

The collection and transportation of samples for subsequent nucleic acid analysis has historically been difficult due to DNA/RNA degradation or modification caused by environmental factors and by pathogens present in the sample. Current collection and transportation methods require the use of cold-chain logistics to prevent or slow down the degradation process. Likewise, in order to ship pathogenic samples a series of steps must be performed in order to inactivate the sample. In addition, depending on the sample being collected, specialized devices or equipment might be required.
Zymo Research offers a wide range of sample collection devices that are tailored to the needs of scientists in the lab and out in the field. Their collection devices implement the DNA/RNA Shield™ technology, which can reliably provide a genetic snapshot at the time of collection by stabilizing the nucleic acids at ambient temperature for up to a month and rendering the sample noninfectious for safe transport. Samples collected in DNA/RNA Shield™ devices are prepared for worry-free transport and are ready for any downstream purification; and unlike any preservative on the market, there is no need for removal of the DNA/RNA Shield™ reagent.
Blood Sample Collection
Conveniently collect whole blood directly into our DNA/RNA Shield™ blood vacuum tubes. Each evacuated tube draws in an exact amount of whole blood which instantly stabilizes the nucleic acid and inactivates any harmful/pathogenic organism s in the sample. For plasma and serum we have pre-filled tubes as well as bulk reagent for custom filling.
Collect samples from the mouth, nose, and throat. Samples can also be collected where a swab may be deemed appropriate per application. Formats include a swab-based collection method into a collection device or a collection tube ready for sample homogenization.
Fecal Sample Collection
Store and inactivate fecal samples with innovative collection devices which include a fecal scoop cup, swab collection system, and lysis tubes. Samples collected are ready for downstream microbiomic analysis.
Environmental Sample Collection
Collect an assortment of inputs including plant, soil, sludge, sediment, fluids, and/or fecal samples with collection devices prefilled with DNA/RNA Shield™.
Tissue & Insect Sample Collection
Ensure stabilization of animal tissues and whole insects with innovative collection devices which include tissue and insect lysis tubes.
Pathogenic Sample Collection
Ensure inactivation of pathogenic samples with specialized collection devices prefilled with DNA/RNA Shield™. Store a variety of inputs including soil, fecal samples, biological fluids, whole organisms, tissues, etc.
Urine Sample Collection
Urine Conditioning Buffer™ (UCB™) ensures nucleic acid stability in urine during sample storage/transport at ambient temperatures. There is no need for refrigeration or specialized equipment. UCB™ can be added to any urine collection device.
