The skin microbiome is the ecosystem of the microbes that live on your skin. Research is showing that the skin microbiome plays a crucial role in how our skin looks, feels, and acts. The skin is our first line of defence against chemical, physical and environmental factors. Our skin harbours millions of ‘friendly’ microbes, that protect us day in-and-out.

BaseClear offers complete solutions to help determine the effect of cosmetics, soaps, personal care products, antibiotics, probiotics or other interventions on the skin microbiome. This analysis is required to put a ‘microbiome-friendly’ claim on a product or to demonstrate the efficacy of a product. BaseClear offers services for the entire process including sampling, logistics, sequencing and downstream statistical analysis.

BaseClear also provides consultancy and support for project design. Our product specialists can advise you regarding sampling, sample preparation and the best technical approach to use. The BaseClear team includes a number of experienced PhD-level molecular biologists, microbiome specialists and bioinformatics experts. How does your product work on the skin microbiome?

The human skin is home to millions of bacteria, fungi and viruses, which compose the skin microbiota. The skin microbiota is extremely important to the skin health and it plays an essential role in skin protection against external infectious or toxic substances.

It is important to maintain the balance of the skin microbiota in order to preserve the best physiology of the skin. Skin microbial communities are largely stable over time, despite the exposure of the skin to different external environments. However the skin microbiome can be affected by for instance personal care products, antibiotics, cosmetics, soaps and nutrition.

The clinical proof of your product efficacy

BaseClear offers a complete solution to demonstrate the real efficacy of your product on the microbiome. Our specialists can give you consultancy and support for your project design, and deliver complete reports including optional in-depth bioinformatics analysis.

Sampling and logistics solutions for skin microbiome analysis projects

BaseClear can help you with the logistics of your research. We offer non-invasive sampling collection kits that contain all the necessary collection materials. The kit contains specific instructions for sampling, ensuring that the process is completed correctly and in a uniform fashion. The samples are then sent directly back to us for a standardised analysis. Besides offering our standard sample collection kit, we can also customize the branding of the kit itself and its contents to suit the needs of your specific project.

The importance of reliable and unbiased DNA extraction from skin samples

BaseClear has optimised and validated extraction procedures to extract DNA and RNA from complex samples, like swabs from skin that has a low biomass. DNA/RNA extraction is an essential step in skin microbiome analysis projects, since the analysis itself has no value if the DNA of the different organisms do not represent the actual microbial community. The extraction method can have a strong influence on the quantification of the total bacteria and the abundance estimations of specific groups. This is where BaseClear’s PhD specialists make sure to use the most effective method drawing from all of the latest research and developments in the field.

Experts meetings on skin microbiome analysis

BaseClear has years of expertise in microbiome analysis, including skin microflora analysis. We routinely organise expert meetings wherein scientists and researchers meet, share and discuss microbiome projects. Topics discussed include discovery, technical challenges, clinical trials, marketing, commercialisation and regulations on microbiome-based products.
