    Dutch consortium unravels first tulip genome

    A consortium of three leading Dutch organisations has been collaborating since May 2017 with the aim of making tulip breeding and production faster and more sustainable. The first results were announced today: using the latest technologies, it is now possible to identify the DNA sequence of the tulip genome. This is one of the biggest genomes ever sequenced. The results will be made available to the public so that the knowledge gained can be fully utilised.

    BaseClear is now approved by the Dutch Techcentre for Life Sciences (DTL) as Technology hotel. Life Science researchers who do not have access to specific facilities at their home institute can apply for funding to get access to the high-end equipment and expertise of Technology Hotels such as BaseClear. DTL acts as a platform for the Technology Hotels to collaborate and coordinate their activities, across life science domains and across technologies.

    BaseClear participates in prestigious EU grant on molecular identification of plants

    A network of researchers in botany from leading institutes in Europe have been granted 4 million euros for the project Plant.ID on molecular identification of plants. The project will fund a training network for 15 doctoral students to collectively work on development of methods and practical tools for automated identification of plants using DNA sequences. The network includes universities, botanic gardens, natural history museums, industry, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders.

    Three leading Dutch organisations, BaseClear, Generade and Dümmen Orange, are to start intensive collaboration to speed up tulip breeding and production and make it more sustainable. Using the latest DNA analysis technologies, it is now possible to unravel huge and highly complex genomes such as that of the tulip. The collaboration brings together the financial resources, knowledge and technologies needed to map the tulip genome, which will be placed in the public domain.
